An ocean crisis.
A human experience.

The Current Crisis explores the relationship between the deterioration of human health and the destruction of water-based environments. An immersive moving-image installation brings that connection into the room.

Blender-built ice caps and turbulent water meet layered footage, masking and a soundscape of news, machinery, breathing and poetry. The shifting camera and accumulating sound create a deliberately overwhelming experience.

The process behind The Current Crisis

Process / Sound / Space
01 / BUILD THE WORLD

Model, texture, move.

Ice caps were modelled in Blender, with HDRI skies, water movement and material nodes developing the environment. Rock textures and normal and height displacement helped tune surface detail. Camera rigging tested different speeds and angles for an overwhelming effect.

02 / COMPOSE THE FILM

Layer the human image.

Rendered environments were combined with filmed imagery in Premiere Pro. Masking and layered compositions connect the deteriorating marine environment with the human figure and exhibition space.

03 / SHAPE THE SOUND

Build an atmosphere.

Breathing, heartbeat, machinery, news and swelling musical tones form the soundscape. Notch filtering reduced problematic high frequencies, while bass, reverb and gradually increasing volume developed the immersive atmosphere.
